Maloney putting Sutherland up
9 December 2008 – By Mark Doyle
Darren Sutherland is currently living with his promoter, Frank Maloney, as he continues his preparations for his eagerly-anticipated professional debut on December 18.
Olympic hero Sutherland agreed to base himself in London after turning professional but has yet to find a place of his own.
As a result, Maloney is putting him up for the time being, an arrangement which suits both as it allows the pair to talk shop all day long.
“My wife puts her ear plugs in when Darren and I get talking. I don’t know who talks the most, Maloney joked.
“He’s also a likeable person and the family enjoy having him around. He has the big punch and the charisma to go all the way.
“Being based in England is a big sacrifice because he loves home and his family, particularly his mum.
“But it’s the only way to do things. Pro boxing requires complete dedication. You’ve got to give up everything really if you want to make the grade, and Darren is doing this.”
Sutherlands first outing will be against Bulgarian Georgi Iliev, who knocked out Keith Cresham in one round earlier this year, marking him out as a real threat.
We will be getting tapes of him and studying them, Maloney promised.
