Low Blows: Patrick ‘The Punisher’ Hyland
Low Blows makes its return this week, and it’s the turn of former Irish champion and featherweight world title challenger Pajo Hyland [31(15)-3(2)].
Hyland retired last year and is now in the process of setting up his own gym with brother Paulie. The Hyland Boxing Academy will be based initially at SBG Tallaght on the Belgard road and has its grand opening next Monday (May 22nd).
If ‘The Punisher’s’ Low Blows are anything to go by, boxers at the HBA are in for a tough time!
Q: Hardest Trainer?
A: Hardest trainer was Aodh Carlyle, I always pushed myself harder watching him train! Coach-wise was my dad, he killed us in the gym and was always on our case over anything!
Q: Biggest Moaner?
A: My brother Paulie was always giving out in training.
Q: Funniest?
A: Robbie Long, in and out of the gym he always had everyone in stitches. Made some training camps easier.
Q: Biggest Ladies’ Man?
A: That was myself of course, until I meet Lorna. Obviously!
Q: Most Intelligent?
A: John Duddy. He was the first boxer I’ve ever seen read a book in Irish Squad training – while we played computer games. He must have brains.
Q: Least Intelligent?
A: My brother Eddie, he could never get jokes or, if someone was slagging him, it took him about twenty mins to cop on.
Q: Hardest Puncher?
A: Gary Russell Jnr obviously, I still have whiplash. In sparring I would say Carl Frampton, I was up sparring him for the Alvarez fight and he hit me with some shot. I only remembered I was sparring when I was driving home at Drogheda.
Q: Most Naturally Talented?
A: My brother Paulie, on his game he was unreal, you couldn’t land a glove on him!
Q: Cheapest?
A: Gary O’Sullivan wouldn’t even pay for a cup of tea! I’m sure he still has money from his first birthday that fella!
Q: Worst Dressed?
A: Robbie Long again. He wore some awful gear that lad.
Q: Worst Dancer?
A: Hard one that, us boxers are great dancers! Well I’ll go Aodh Carlyle, he only has the one dance move haha
Q: Biggest Messer?
A: One fella in my whole career who never stop messing was Mark Kennedy from Celtic Warriors Gym! One of his best was he had my dad believe he won five Senior titles and never turned pro because of the politics in the game! Couldn’t stop laughing at my dad’s face believing him.
