Leo Santa Cruz preparing to avoid Frampton’s power
Leo Santa Cruz has already admitted he is wary of Carl Frampton’s punching power.
The WBA featherweight champion, whose title ‘The Jackal’ challenges for on in New York on July 30 says he is aware Frampton packs a punch and is taking the necessary steps to ensure he doesn’t taste his opponents power.
Undefeated Santa Cruz believes he may have to employ the same tactics he did against Kiko Marintez, who he stopped on the same night Frampton out pointed Scott Quigg.
The three weight World champion is planning to be ‘slick and sharp’ against a fighter who has 14 knockouts in 22 fights.
“We will prepare in the gym not to get hit with those big punches. We know he has that power, we have seen it and we will have to be slick and smart,” the Mexican said.
“We are going to have to move and not stay there in front of him. We are going to have to move and stay on the outside. If we feel his power we are going to have to move like the way we did against Kiko Martinez.
“We will just have to be smart and as the fight goes on we will decide what to do.”
Most expect Santa Cruz to try and take the fight to Frampton. El Terremoto only has one way of fighting and that is to come forward throwing punches in bunches, it will be interesting to see if Ireland’s leading fighting light will try stand his ground and match the Mexican or try to out box him on the back foot.
