Kid Galahad brings in Limerick teen for sparring
The life of an underage amateur boxer is sometimes not very glamorous. Cold nights, empty venues, missing out on some of the things a ‘regular’ teenage experiences.
OLOL lightweight Paddy Donovan however has had a bit of a different experience over the past few months.
The Limerick star spent some time in the Ingle Gym in Sheffield during the Summer. It was business rather than pleasure for the 2015 World Junior silver medalist, who was getting in some training for the National U-18 Championships – where he would subsequently win his eighth Irish title.
The recently-turned 17 year old also got to experience some glitz and glamour when the Sky Sports cameras came to the gym for Kell Brook‘s WBC one-month checkweight ahead of his middleweight title bout with Gennady Golovkin – and Donovan appeared in the live broadcast of the weigh-in on Sky Sports News.
While in Sheffield the slick puncher spent some time sparring former British, Commonwealth, and European champion Kid Galahad.Donovan was so impressive against the unbeaten former Carl Frampton rival that he was been invited back to the gym for further sparring.
Donovan told Irish-Boxing.com that “the spar we had was great so one of the coaches at the Ingle Boxing Gym was speaking to my dad and asked him to bring me over again.”
In Sheffield at the moment, the trip is brilliant preparation for Donovan ahead of the World Youth Championships in St Petersburg this November.
