Katie Taylor slams “absolutely clueless” BBC pundits following criticism

Katie Taylor [8(4)-0] has responded angrily to criticism received following her maiden world title defence last week.

The WBA lightweight champion retained her belt for the first time last week in London, defeating Jessica McCaskill in an entertaining fight at the York Hall.

Not everyone was impressed following the unanimous decision win however, and the Wicklow star came in for some harsh criticism from Steve Bunce and Mike Costello on their BBC Radio 5 Live show.

The English pundits argued that Taylor had a “leaky defence,” and that the fact she was drawn into a competitive fight with unheralded slugger McCaskill showed a lack of a boxing brain.

The response to this talk was mixed at best, and Taylor lambasted the pair today – taking aim at their own boxing knowledge.

Giving her take on the analysis in a post on social media, Taylor stated “no they don’t [have a point].”

“I would’ve thought that people making those comments would have some knowledge.”

“The reason I won the fight well is cos I used my boxing brain and outsmarted my opponent.”

“If people who particularly are involved in boxing can’t see that, they are absolutely clueless.”

Taylor is currently enjoying some well deserved time off after two world title fights in less than seven weeks – in a year in which she fought a total of six times.

The Ross Enamait-trained former amateur legend looks likely to fight next in Dublin after the Christmas break, with a homecoming date a the 3Arena being talked about for April.
