Katie Taylor makes European final Grace has to settle for Bronze

By IABA press officer Bernard O’Neill

Olympic champion Katie Taylor will meet France’s Estelle Mossely in a repeat of the 2013 European Union final in the European Championships final in Bucharest, Romania tomorrow.

Taylor comfortably beat Denitsa Eliseeva of Bulgaria on a unanimous decision in today’s lightweight semi-final, but Kilkenny welterweight Clare Grace bowed out to England’s
Stacey Copeland.

Mossely shocked Russian southpaw Sofya Ochigava, who Taylor beat in the 2011 European, World and Olympic finals in the Netherlands, China and England, today.

Twenty-year-old Grace gave it absolutely everything against 32-year-old Stockport-native Copeland.

But the Callan BC southpaw had to be content with bronze and creating her own piece of Irish boxing history today, as, courtesy of reaching the last-four, she is the only Irish female boxer besides Taylor to medal at Elite European level.

“Katie breezed into the final. It was a brilliant performance and her third win this week. Clare gave it everything. It was a very gutsy and courageous performance from her,” said Irish team manager Fiona Hennigan.

Saturday’s finals being at 12pm (Irish time). Taylor will be aiming for her 6th successive European gold against Mossely and her 16th major title – in-a-row.

Saturday’s final begin at 12pm (Irish time). Taylor and Mossely are slated for the 5th fight on the program.
The Irish squad are due to arrive home via Dublin Airport at 3:05pm on Sunday afternoon.
