Joe Smith Jr wants Adonis Stevenson next
Irish-American light heavyweight Joe Smith Jr [22(18)-1(1)] shocked the boxing World last month with a first round demolition of title-chasing Pole Andrzej Fonfara in Chicago.
The surprise win has catapulted the previously unknown Long Islander into contention for further big fights, and ‘The Irish Bomber’ is keen to build on his victory.
Indeed the 26 year old wants none other than WBC 175lbs champion Adonis Stevenson. The Canadian-based Hatian defends his title in Quebec against Thomas Williams Jr, and Smith would like a shot in the near furute
Smith told On The Ropes that “I’m hoping it’s one of them [World Champions] next.”
“I want to get to the top as fast as possible and I would like to fight Adonis Stevenson next if we can make it happen.”
“I’m motivated and focused on getting to the top to become the champion, nothing is going to change that.”
The Mastic Beach puncher is confident that he would have the beating of ‘Superman’ Stevenson and reasoned that “I think I’m a little better on my feet, maybe I can outbox him for a few rounds.”
“He leaves himself open too, so maybe eventually I’d catch him with a shot.”
“I would have to be cautious, I never underestimate anybody, I know he’s a tough guy and he can punch as well.”
“I just have to go in there cautiously and do what I do.”
