Jay Byrne scores stunning debut win versus dangerous opponent

Facing one of the toughest debut opponents in recent memory, Dublin light middleweight Jay Byrne emerged victorious over Hungarian Gabor Ambrus.

And it wasn’t a points win either, with Byrne knocking the tough Central European out in the second round to turn some heads

Byrne, a late starter in the sport, showed impressive skills, with a solid defence and great judgement of range, and an effective double or triple jab.

The Dubliner had confident and mature start showing no sign of nerves, and had his opponent down with a big straight in the second round.

Ambrus rose unsteadily and Byrne would have been forgiven for allowing adrenaline to take over, but the 29 year old was calculated and worked his way in before finishing the Hungarian with a lovely short uppercut.

Jay Byrne’s shiny new record now reads 1(1)-0, while Ambrus drops to 7(4)-5(5).
