Ireland off to a losing start at European Championships
Bantamweight Dervla Duffy lost Ireland’s first bout of the European Women’s Championships this afternoon.
The Mulhuddart boxer was defeated by Romanian Lacramioara Perijoc on a unanimous decision in Sofia, Bulgaria, in their last 16 contest.
After a close first round, the Eastern European boxer would pull away for a deserved win against the big-punching Irishwoman.
Head coach Zaur Antia relayed that Duffy gave it everything against a tough and experienced opponent.
It was an inauspicious start for Ireland at the tournament, but they will aim to the get back to winning ways tomorrow when there are two fighters in action – Lauren Hogan and Gráinne Walsh.
