Ireland name squad for Romanian Elite Multi-Nations
The Irish Athletic Boxing Association have today announced a five-strong squad which will travel to Romania for the Nicolae Linca Golden Belt Elite multi-nations later this month.
The Irish squad comprises of two men and three women for the tournament which begins next Wednesday (May 10th) in Iasi city.
World silver medallists Kelly Harrington and Joe Ward, European and World Universities bronze medallist Christina Desmond, Carly McNaul, and Kiril Afansev will represent Ireland.
McNaul made her Irish debut at the weekend as part of the Dublin International Round Robin, while Desmond and Harrington won 5 bouts between them over the four days. Ward missed the action due to a minor hand injury.
The squad depart for Romania on May 9th.
The Golden Belt multi-nations is named after Romanian boxing legend Nicolae Linca who edged Irish boxing legend Fred Tiedt in the 1956 Olympic 67kg final in Melbourne.
