Ireland’s boxers will once again fight on finals day at a major tournament this afternoon.

Jason Myers and William Hayden are through to today’s finals at the European Schoolboy Championships in Zagreb, Croatia.

Both young men upgraded their bronze medals to at least silver in impressive style in yesterday’s semi-finals.

But Cain Lewis,Francis Maughan,Patrick Collins and Jason Irwin had to settle for bronze despite big performances at the last-four stage of the tournament.

Lewis and Irwin can consider themselves particularly unlucky to not be in Sunday’s deciders after being adjudged to have lost on split decisions.

Hayden put in another massive performance to see off the challenge of Russia’s Viktor Kashin over three rounds.

The head-to-head clashes between Ireland and Russia in Zagreb now stands at 4-4.

Earlier, Myers showed his class to book his ticket into the 68kg final at the expense of England’s Ryan Dicken.

Collins and Maughan, who was involved in a slugfest with Croatia’s Matej Hlaca, left absolutely everything in the ring.

“The entire squad gave it everything today and we’re happy with what we got,” said team manager Paddy Gallagher.

“But Jason Irwin clearly won his fight. He won every round and it should have been three wins for Ireland today and we should have three into the finals.

“We have another big day ahead of us tomorrow and the boys are looking forward to the challenge.”

Sunday’s finals begin at 11am (Irish time).

Team Ireland are due to arrive home via Dublin Airport via Frankfurt at 11.05pm on Monday morning.
