Ireland finish third in Chemistry Cup
Ireland finished in third spot in the medals table at the 41st Chemistry Cup in Germany.
Joe Ward, David Oliver Joyce and Stephen Donnelly claimed two gold and one bronze at the tournament which concluded yesterday in Halle.
Ireland, Germany and Russia were the only nations to secure two gold medals in Halle. Russia, Germany and Ireland, in that order, topped the medals table.
Kazakhstan, who topped the medals table at the 2013 AIBA World Elite Championships, looked poised to finish in pole position in Halle after advancing four boxers to Saturday’s Chemistry Cup finals.
But the Central Asian powerhouses didn’t factor David Oliver Joyce and Joe Ward – or Korea’s Jonghun Shin –  into the equation and won just one gold yesterday on a walkover.
Meanwhile, Joe Joyce, who edged out Ireland’s Dean Gardiner on a split decision, won England’s only gold on Saturday.
Germany’s Abass Baraou, who was involved in the bout of the tournament with Stephen Donnelly in the last-four, finished on top of the 69kg podium.
The Irish squad have been in training camp and competition in Germany for over two weeks.
