Ireland announce team for European Junior Championships


The IABA have confirmed a 25-strong squad that will represent Ireland at the European Junior Championships in Romania next month.

The tournament begins in the eastern city of Galati on May 22nd.

The Irish team – 13 boys and 12 girls – is comprised of Open Cadet champions from last month at the National Stadium, with fighters entered in 25 of the 26 weights. +80kg boxer Sophie Burke (Tohar Pheadair) is the only such champion not to feature.

Ireland won 13 medals at the championships last year in Anapa and bronze medallists Michael Donoghue and Breda Quilligan are in the squad again.

Also set to feature are European Schoolboys/Girls gold medallist Winnie McDonagh, silver medallists Eoghan Lavin and Dearbhla Tinnelly, and bronze medallists Robyn Kelly and John Ward
