IABA chief: ‘No immediate change’ following Olympic eligibility shift

IABA President Pat Ryan has signalled, as most boxing fans have automatically assumed, that it will be business as usual for Irish boxers in terms of qualification for the upcoming Rio Olympics.

The statement comes following Olympic boxing’s international governing body, the AIBA, today voted to ratify Article 13 (J) of the AIBA Statutes.

The change, voted in by 95% of delegates, gives national governing bodies full control of whom they send to AIBA events, regardless of how many traditional pro fights they have had.

In the aftermath of the decision, hysteria and misinformation has been aplenty in some media outlets, and Ryan issued the following statement to allay any fears:

“‘The IABA wishes to make it very clear that there will be no immediate changes in response to this vote, until there has been a full consultation with the relevant stakeholders within the organisation”
