‘I genuinely don’t have a clue’ – Archie Sharp rumours quashed as Carl Frampton reveals next opponent remains a mystery
Carl Frampton [27(15)-2(0)] has a good idea of the where and the when in terms of his next fight, but has no idea as to the who.
The three weight world title hopeful is in Manchester training and will compete on one of the planned BT Sports broadcast Frank Warren cards.
‘The Jackal’ is expected to be out in July or early August at the latest, but the question remains, who will he face?
Rumour late last week suggested Archie Sharp was an option. Top Rank remain keen to make Frampton versus WBO super featherweight world champion Jamel Herring.
The American defends his title against Jonathan Oquendo on July 2 on one of the Top Rank ‘Bubble’ cards – and the suggestion was, he may have to make a mandatory defence if he emerges victorious.
The Belfast fighter, a winner of world titles at super bantam and featherweight, is ranked #6 with the WBO while Declan Geraghty defeater Sharp is #3 – and some surmised they would meet in an eliminator.
However, Frampton claims he is unaware as to who is next – and it’s safe to assume if it was Sharp not only would he know by now, but fans would too.
Frank Warren would want maxium exposure for a fight that can’t secure him ticket revenue and the build up would have already started.
“I don’t know who it’s going to be. Promoters are hoping Europeans can come in by that time, but who knows whats happening,” Frampton told VIP Boxing.
“The landscape is changing almost daily, so I genuinely don’t have a clue who I am fighting.”
Speaking to ITV’s Ruth Gorman Frampton suggested his opponent should be a similar level to Herring’s July 2 foe.
