Good friends Sean Turner and Con Sheehan differ over Irish title fight

Con Sheehan [4(1)-0] and Sean Turner [9(6)-0] share a long-time friendship, but both heavyweights are willing to put that aside for an Irish title fight.

This year the pair became managerial stablemates under Macklin’s Gym Marbella, making a fight between them more likely. While they have known each other since their early teens, neither have much issue putting this aside for a fight for the green belt.

However, while ‘Big Sexy’ Turner would perhaps like to fight to build slightly, Sheehan would prefer to jump into the bout sooner rather then later.

Both of the big men spoke to Irish-Boxing.com about the prospect of facing each other, and both expressed their desire to trade leather with the other despite their strong friendship – although they differ slightly in terms of timeline.

Tipperary’s Sheehan, who defeated the Dubliner in the 2012 Elite final, described how “myself and Turner have been going back and forward, but we’ve known each other since we were 13 or 14, we’re good mates.”

“But when it comes time to fight, we’ll put that aside and do a job on each othe, a bad job on each other.”

“Hopefully it’s sooner rather than later, because he was right, he was dead right in what he said in one of his interviews that it would be very unlikely to have two Irish guys fighting for the European title. So lets get it done, early next year, late next year, get it out of the way and settle it.”

Turner, who will first need to fight in an eight rounder to gain title eligibilty, outlined how “I don’t know what’s going to happen to be honest with you, it’s all really down to the management. Me and Con have been friends for years. We’ve always got on well, we’ve never had bad blood, we’d sit down and have a dinner together.”

“I’d really like to have that fight for a big, big, title so maybe wait a little bit longer now because of the friendship,”

“But listen, if it happens, it happens. We’re both fighters, that’s it really.”
