Golden Moment – Niamh Fay wins European Youth gold
Niamh Fay is the new European Youth champion after another high-octane, high-punching performance in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The Swords BC bantamweight beat Croatia’s Nikolina Cacic on a 4-1 split decision – 30-27,29-28,29-28,29-28, 28-29 – to take the 54kg title.
Fay dominated the first two rounds and rocked her opponent with big hooks off both hands en route to victory.
Cacic, to her credit, stood up to Fay’s relentless aggression and won the last frame 4-1, but the Dubliner had more than enough in the bank to take the gold medal after winning the first and seconds rounds 4-1 and 5-0.
Fay won four fights en route to gold in Bulgaria and joins Aoife O’Rourke as an international European gold medal winner.
Dom O’Rourke, President of the IABA and Irish team managers Anna Moore and Paddy Osbourne hailed her performance this afternoon.
