Golden Boy visa ‘mix-up’ messes up O’Kane ahead of title eliminator

Eamonn O’Kane’s preparations for his massive Madison Square Garden middleweight title eliminator with Tureano Johnson have been hampered by visa issues which have prevented him from flying out to New York as scheduled. The Derry boxer [14(5)-1(1)-1] was due to fly to the Big Apple yesterday but was grounded when it emerged that there were problems with his visa – which was meant to be handled by U.S promotional giant, and promoter of Johnson, Golden Boy Promotions.

Speaking to the Derry Journal, a frustrated O’Kane explained that “Golden Boy were supposed to have our visas all sorted out when we got the airport and they haven’t done it.”

“I’m disappointed in Golden Boy. They are supposed to be among the best people about in boxing and it’s disappointing that they have been so unprofessional on this occasion.”

“It’s all down to Golden Boy and they have to sort it out.”

However, the 2010 Commonwealth gold medalist is still confident despite the airport gaffe, reasoning that “I’m in a good place right now. I’ve done everything right in preparation for this fight.”

“Ideally we would have flown out today but hopefully we can get this resolved and get out as soon as possible to make up for it.”

“I’ll possibly go back home to Swindon and do a bit of training but we’ll wait and see what develops.”

“I’m in the best nick of my life so I’m ready for whatever.”

The 33 year old concluded, saying that “I want to get out there now!”

“I’m going to get out there and do everyone proud.”
