Glynn and Mai-Gartland guarantee SILVER at European Juniors
Sinainn Glynn and Ellie Mai-Gartland upgraded their guaranteed bronze medals at the European Junior Championships in Anapa to at least silver today.
The Irish duo beat England’s Sameenah Toussan and Danielle Marshall on unanimous decisions today in Russia in the opening session of semi-finals.
Tipp talent Mai-Gartland consistently cut down the distance between herself and the rangy Toussan to deliver shots off both hands in all three rounds en-route to a place in the 54kg decider.
Offaly’s Glynn was giving away a lot of height to the towering Marshall but the Irish 60kg got inside to land big shots in a power-packed performance which saw her win unanimously.
Ireland’s other five semi-finalists in early action were defeated and will take home bronze.
Donegal’s Leah Gallen was unlucky to go out on a 3-2 split against Italy’s Miriam Tomasone at 66kg while big Kori Goad, who received a bye to the semis, bounced back from an early count to push Poland’s Olowia Toborek all the way.
Mickes Donohoe gave a fine account of himself against Russia’s gold medal favourite Mikhail Grigorian at 46kg while Ireland’s female 46kger pulled out injured in the third round of her clash with Turk Gamze Soguksu which was her first bout having recieved a bye. Up against another Russian favourite, Kaitlyn Doyle was stopped by Margarita Zueva.
Irish female captain Leanne Murphy, Jon McConnell, Barry O’Connor, Lauren Dempsey, Patrick Myers, and Lisa O’Rourke are in action in the evening session today.
Boxing begins at 4pm (Irish time).
