GGG wants Lee versus Quillin winner
HE expressed a desire to fight Miguel Cotto after stopping Martin Murray in Monte Carlo on Saturday night, but Gennady Golovkin wants the winner of Andy Lee and Peter Quillin’s WBO World title fight according to his manager.
‘GGG’, who once came close to fighting Anthony Fitzgerald and stopped Matthew Macklin, stopped Murray in 10 and cemented his name as one of the best pound for pound punchers on the planet with a one sided win.
Names like Carl Froch and Cotto have been dropped as future foes, but his manager Oleg Herman doesn’t believe future Hall of Famer, Cotto is keen and revealed his charge would prefer to unify the division rather than move up to super middleweight to trade leather with Froch.
So whoever holds the WBO title after April 11 appeals the most for Kazakh. The winner of the Lee Quillin clash will have to defend against Billy Joe Saunders, but a Golovkin early next year certainly appeals.
“He hopes in the future to fight against Andy Lee and of course there could be a potential fight with Froch,” Herman told EPSN. “He could fight in the UK one day if there’s a good opponent – maybe Carl Froch or maybe Andy Lee, it depends.
“He would love to fight the Lee-Quillin winner because he wants to unify the world titles. He’s mandatory challenger for Miguel Cotto but I don’t think that fight will happen soon.
“Floyd Mayweather is not a realistic option for Gennady – it’s just a fantasy. It’s beyond our scope of opponents because of a number of issues.
“Carl Froch and Andy Lee are definitely more realistic. Andre Ward has not fought since November 2013 so he hasn’t fought for 18 months now and he will want a tune-up fight when he comes back and then we will need to then build up the fight with Gennady. It takes time to do all that but 2016 it’s [a fight against Ward] a fight that is realistic for Gennady.
