Gary Sweeney makes gallant return this weekend following injury woe
After almost 13 months on the sidelines, Gary Sweeney [3(3)-0] finally makes his return this weekend.
The Connacht cruiser made a sensational start to his pro career last year with some eye-catching knockouts and looked ready to step up in 2017.
Alas, the year turned into something of a nightmare for the former Elite Senior Champion, with a succession of injuries keeping him out of action.
Thankfully, the injury issues are over for Sweeney, and the 23 year old makes his return on Saturday in England.
Sweeney will box on the David Price-headlined MTK London show at the Brentwood Centre in Essex, and ‘The Gallant’ is eager to pick up where he left off.
Such a long hiatus would be undoubtedly tough for a young prospect, but Sweeney credits his tea for keeping him in check.
The European Youth silver medalist told Irish-Boxing.com how “I had a problem with my lower back so I couldn’t fight but, I am back now.”
“The team I have they kept me positive during the time I was out.”
Sweeney returns in a four rounder, but he will not have an easy touch, and has been matched with arguably the toughest opponent of his pro career thus far.
The Ballinrobe hotshot will face Lithuanian giant Imantas Davidaitis [6(4)-25(9)-1] on a show which will be streamed live in its entirety via IFL TV on YouTube.
The confident Sweeney though has no worries, and believes the bout will kickstart his career ahead of new year.
The MTK Global prospect tells viewers to tune in on Saturday night “to see me beat the 6foot 8inch giant.”
“We have big plans for 2018, it’s going to be a big year”
