Gallagher: Americans were laughing at Frampton

Scott Quigg coach Joe Gallagher claims Carl Frampton’s performance against Alejandro Gonzalez Jr made fight moguls in America laugh.

‘The Jackal’ was on the canvas twice in the first round, but recovered to comfortably out point the gallant Mexican.

Frampton has since admitted that he was below par in the PBC clash for a number of reasons, but the Stateside fight commentators did seem impressed with the Belfast fighters skill set.

However, speaking last week during the three day press tour for Frampton v Quigg, Gallagher all but indicated ‘The Jackal’ was somewhat of a laughing stock Stateside.

“They were all laughing about him struggling with Gonzalez,” said Gallagher.

“I think Barry asked for his opinion on who’d win between the two of them and Freddie went, ‘well Scott Quigg’’.”

No doubt Gallagher’s claims were part of the get-under-Frampton’s-skin tactics and, although his display was below par, it was anything but laughable.

However, that didn’t stop Quigg singing off the same hymn sheet as his trainer.

“We were over there at the same time, me and Joe, it was after (Frampton’s) last performance,” said Quigg. “The way Barry bangs the drum about him, everyone was expecting him to go and do a job on Gonzalez, who isn’t really rated over there.”

“When the fight happened there was a bit of ‘what is Barry going on about?'”
