Galway’s Gabriel Dossen guaranteed a brilliant bronze at the World Youth Championships in Russia this afternoon.

The 16 year old light welter defeated Rohan Polanco Emiliano of the Dominican Republic via unanimous decision following a cagey quarter final bout in St Petersburg.

It was a very close opener that may have been edged by the Caribbean fighter.

The stand-off nature continued into the second until a warning from the referee to engage, and southpaw Dossen would finish the round the strong and continue this into an exciting third stanza in which he landed the cleaner shots.

Olympic BC’s Dossen now joins middleweight Michael Nevin in Friday’s semi finals where they will look to guarantee silvers.

Nevin will face Scotland’s William Hutchison, while Dossen is up against Russian Sergei Margarian.

Ireland’s other quarter finalist, light heavyweight Christopher O’Reilly unfortunately was defeated by Bekzad Nurdaueltov of Kazakhstan this morning
