Gabriel Dossen gets Ireland off the mark in Romania
After four losses on the trot, Galway’s Gabriel Dossen got Ireland up and running this afternoon in the Round of 16 at the European Under-22 Championships in Romania.
There was no luck though for team captain Jordan Moore who fell to a controversial defeat.
18-year-old welterweight Dossen, competing at middleweight for these championships, defeated the come-forward Hambardum Hakobya of Armenia, showing some real flashes of quality as well as grit to withstand constant pressure.
He will now box to guarantee a bronze medal – his third in as many major international tournaments – later in the week.
Dublin bantamweight Moore was given the nightmare draw of reigning champion and home favourite Eusebi Jitaru.
The rangey Glasnevin fighter gave a phenomenal display of outside fighting in the opening two rounds while Jitaru came on strong in the closer – and the Romanian would be handed the win, much to Moore’s displeasure.
