Frankie Gavin: Peter McDonagh is a nice guy, but I deserve Euro shot more

Peter McDonagh and Dean Byrne put on a show at the National Stadium last weekend for the Irish welterweight title, with McDonagh emerging victorious after a ten round battle.

With the win, the Galway man secured his third Irish belt, and is now aiming for a European title fight against the winner of Paulie Malignaggi and Gianluca Branco.

However, another former Irish champion, Frankie Gavin, believes that McDonagh doesn’t merit this shot – and the Birmingham-born man feels that the winner of his British and Commonwealth title fight with Sam Eggington should get a crack at the European belt first.

Gavin was due to challenge for cross-city rival Eggington’s belts last month in Birmingham, but had to withdraw due to injury.

This fight is set to be rescheduled for early next year.
