Frampton eyes Selby fight at Windsor Park next year

Carl Frampton has, as expected, confirmed that he will not be facing Lee Selby next.

The Welsh Mayweather wanted an immediate shot at Frampton – which the Belfast man was open to – but ‘The Jackal’ now looks set to opt for a contractually-obliged rematch with Leo Santa Cruz.

Indeed Frampton also feels that a unification with the IBF featherweight champion would have needed to be in Summer regardless.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Frampton explained that “it needs to be spring or early summer because it’s a stadium fight and a unification fight between two British World champions.”

“I’d love that fight at Windsor Park but I feel, as I am the new WBA champion and even though Lee has been the IBF champion for a few fights now, I am in the driving seat because I sell all the tickets.”

Frampton reiterated again that he only wants major fights from here on, and a run of fights spanning Quigg, Santa Cruz twice, and Selby would certainly fulfill this wish.

The Jackal outlined how “all the fights are big from here on in.”

“There’s no easy options any more and that’s the way it should be. I’m not the youngest guy in the world, I’m 29 and feel like I’ve given my whole life to boxing, so I am reaping the rewards now.

“I am a two-weight world champion. I am entitled to be involved in big fights now and I am happy with that.”
