Frampton-Quigg undercard news: World title eliminator rumoured

With Luke Campbell no longer on the Frampton-Quigg undercard at the Manchester Arena it is heavily rumoured that Matchroom have filled this gap with European super bantamweight champion Gavin McDonnell [14(4)-0-2].

Additionally, it is believed that the Doncaster fighter will be participating in a WBC World title eliminator on the February 27th Sky Box Office PPV show. The mooted opponent is Panama’s Jorge ‘El Bufalo’ Sanchez [15(9)-0]. Sanchez is the current Panamanian champion, but has never fought outside his home country.

29 year old McDonnell is twin brother of former bantamweight champion Jamie and a regular sparring partner of Belfast’s British champion Ryan Burnett. A win for McDonnell against Sanchez will help put him in the queue for a title shot against the winner of Julio Ceja – whom his brother defeated to win the IBF bantamweight title – and Hugo Ruiz.

The WBC title fight between Ceja and Ruiz also takes place on February 27th in Anaheim, California, on the undercard of the featherweight title fight between Leo Santa Cruz and Kiko Martinez.

In his most recent fight, McDonnell defended the European title previously held by Frampton by outpointing Jeremy Parodi over twelve round. Coincidentally, ‘The Jackal’ also defeated the well-endowed Frenchman in his first defence of the EBU belt.

McDonnell himself has remained tight-lipped, but revealed last night that an announcement on his next fight will be made this week.
