Four Irish boxers to fight for bronze at European Youth Championships

Four Irish boxers have reached the quarter-finals of the European Youth Championships in Turkey and will box for bronze over the next two days.

The 27th edition of the championships are ongoing in Antalya and there will be Irish interest at the business-end of the tournament.

Limerick phenom Paddy Donovan has scored two stoppages to reach the quarters in the light welterweight class. The OLOL star knocked out Polish and Slovenian opposition and will now take on home favourite Tugrulhan Erdemir for bronze on Wednesday in what will be a repeat of their 2015 World Junior final – which Erdermir edged.

Sligo slugger Jordan Myers has come through two wars to reach the quarters at middleweight. The European Schoolboys gold medalist overcame Israeli and Bulgarian opposition and will now fight Serbian Djozdic Buksic for bronze, also on Wednesday.

Cousin of the Rio Olympian, Davey Oliver Joyce Jr defeated Azeri Amid Alizada yesterday and the Ballymun flyweight will face England’s Ivan Price for bronze tomorrow.

World Youth bronze medalist Gabriel Dossen cruised to the quarters with classy wins over Estonia and Ukraine, and the Galway speedster will now box Azeri Nijat Hasanov for bronze tomorrow.

Craig Kavanagh, Terry Donoghue, and Eamer Coughlan bowed out earlier in the competition.

Ireland won a silver and bronze at last year’s tournament courtesy of Oliver McCarthy and Terry McEntee respectively.
