Forget the British title fight, my focus for now is on claiming WBO strap says Burnett
Ryan Burnett is so focused on the present that he isn’t even allowing himself glance two weeks into the future.
The heralded Belfast bantamweight prospect has the biggest month of his career ahead as he challenges for the WBO European title live on Boxnation this coming Saturday night, before he faces Jason Booth for the British crown on November 23rd.
The WBO title fight with Gagi Edisherashvili, which plays out in the Manchester Arena on the undercard of Liam Smith and Terry Flanagan’s World title fights this Saturday night, afford’s Andy Lee’s gym mate the chance to claim his first major title – and a ranking that makes him World title eligible.
And while the bout with Jason Booth is just 14 days away and gives the 22 year old talent the chance to make a statement and claim a more prestigious strap, it is not in Burnett’s thoughts at the moment.
“I am looking forward to the fight as it is a big opportunity for me to progress my career and win a title.”
“I have trained really hard for this fight and I intend to be the new WBO European Bantamweight Champion come Saturday night.”
“My opponent is a tough guy and he is coming to win, so I know I have to perform on the night if I want to get my hands on the belt, and then get my head down again for that shot at the British title, but all I am focused on now is Saturday night,” added Burnett.
The Youth Olympic Gold medal winner started his career under the tutelage of Ricky Hatton, but has really started to fulfill his vast potential under Adam Booth and believes Andy Lee’s coach has helped him progress.
“He has made me feel more comfortable with my style and I thought I knew about boxing until I started training with him and then I realised I knew very little about boxing. So it has been very in good for my development to be working with him,” he added.
