EU shot for Rogan
18 May 2011 – Jonny Stapleton
Martin Rogan has been handed the chance to re-gatecrash heavyweight boxings big time after securing a fight with the EU, WBA and WBO inter-continental champion Robert Helenius.
The EBU have made the former Commonwealth champion mandatory challenger for the world number two and the European title fight looks set to take place in Germany in the Summer. Former Prizefighter winner Rogan, who is two fights into a comeback from a serious neck injury, is excited about a return to championship boxing and is predicting a dream outcome against the Nordic Nightmare. The Iron Man, who has split from promoter Brain Peters, claims his proposed bout with the undefeated big hitting Finish finisher is the biggest of his career.
Helenius holds wins over some respected heavyweight names including former world champ Lamon Brewster and is seen by most as a future world champion. Rogan, however is planning to upset the apple cart by hijacking the German based fighters world title dream when the pair meet in latter in the summer.
The fight looks to go ahead on June 26. I am mandatory challenger and purse bids are next week. This is a big chance for me to get back in the lime light. He has fought some decent names and he is ranked in the top ten. Without doubt its the biggest fight of my career. It is bigger than the Commonwealth title fights because he is a would be world champion on the verge of a world title shot, Rogan told Mirror Sport yesterday.
Defeating such a promising talent seems like a big ask for the 40 year old especially considering Rogan will have to travel to Germany. But The Entertainer, who is upset with his recent standings in the British rankings, is confident he can inflict a first ever defeat on the Finn and give his fans more success to scream about.
I am in training already and I am confident. I have no qualms about going to Germany. Its just a plane ride away and I will be going there to do the business. I am going to beat him up and knock him out and if I put the work in I am confident I can do that.
