Emma Flannery – “I was catching her with right hands every time she threw a jab”
Baldoyle flyweight Emma Flannery opened the show at the National Senior (Intermediate) Championships on Friday night with a destructive performance.
The youngster won a Dublin derby against Mulhuddart’s Nadine Maguire, effectively negotiating a reach disadvantage to land big shots and take a unanimous decision win (40:36 x3).
Now a four-time Irish champion, Flannery spoke to Irish-Boxing.com afterwards and described how “I enjoyed it. I felt relaxed going in.”
“It was tough because she was taller than me, but I was catching her with right hands every time she threw a jab, so it was working well for me.”
“I thought I was hurting her with my right hand definitely, catching her over the top, it just worked every time.”
The confident Dub is now looking towards the big one in February and the number one spot in Ireland, where she would have to fight off the likes of Donna Barr and Céire Smith. Flannery outlined how “that’s my first senior title and now I’m hoping to win the Elites next February.”
