Eddie Hearn hails Katie Taylor as the “biggest star in World boxing”
Ireland can lay claim to having the “biggest star in world boxing” if Eddie Hearn is to be believed.
Forget the likes Canelo Alvarez, Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, Gennady Golovkin and the like Katie Taylor is the biggest name in the sport claims the Matchroom boss.
The Wicklow lightweight, current holder of the WBA and IBF belts, looks to take the WBO belt on Friday March 15th at the Liacouras Centre in Philadelphia.
When speaking about how excited he was to be promoting a show on which the Bray fighter will attempt to become a three-belt world lightweight champion with victory over Rose Volante, Hearn billed the Irish star as the biggest in the sport.
The promoter, who also looks after Jono Carroll and IBF super bantamweight world champion TJ Doheny, also discussed ‘King Kong’s’ IBF super featherweight world title challenge.
Carroll will challenge Tevin Farmer for a strap James Tennyson recently fought for on the top of the March 15th bill and Hearn claimed he was delighted to bring ‘The American Idol’ back to his home town.
“I can’t wait for March 15 at the Liacouras Center,” said promoter Eddie Hearn.
“It’s our first ever event in Philadelphia and it’s an honor to promote in this great city on St Patrick’s weekend.
“Tevin Farmer is one of the great boxing underdog stories of our generation and I’m so happy he is getting the chance to bring that World championship home against a feisty and talented Jono Carroll.”
“The biggest star in World boxing, Ireland’s Katie Taylor, looks to unify the division against WBO champ Rose Volante. Philly favorite Gabe Rosado takes on Poland’s Maciej Sulecki in a thrilling Middleweight match up and Olympic stars Daniyar Yeleussinov and John Joe Nevin.”
“It’s stacked from top to bottom and it’s going to be an electric night of boxing in Philadelphia.”
Of course, Hearn is in promotion mode so his claims of Taylor being the biggest star in th sport should be viewed through this lens.
In terms of earning power, profileand following, Taylor does not rank top
However, Taylor is most definitely the biggest star in female boxing – by some distance – and there is an argument that her impact on the sport and the changes and developments she has helped bring go beyond all others.
