Doubt over Lee v Vera
31 May 2011 – Jonny Stapleton
Newly crowned NABA and NABF Middleweight Champion, Andy Lee has asked Brian Vera not to deny him the chance to avenge his sole career defeat.
Talk of a Vera Lee rematch have been rife for over two years and the Irish and Texan middleweights looked set to meet on HBO this Autumn. However, despite telling Mirror Sport that he wanted a Lee return and had opened talks with Lees promoter Lou Di Bella earlier this year, Vera interest seems to have cooled of late.
Indeed team Lee claim a very nervous and concerned Vera is presently unwilling to take on the Limerick southpaw in a bout that some believe could act as a world title eliminator. Lee is now worried he wont get a chance at ring redemption and asked Vera to let him prove who he is the great fighter once and for all.
It would mean a lot to me to avenge my only loss and show the fans who really is the better fighter between us. I would like my chance to get my revenge and redemption. Lets get the fight on now Brian and prove who the best fighter is, said Lee.
Lees legendary trainer Emanuel Steward believes the timing has never been better for the two prize-fighters to meet with Vera coming off a successful win against the talented Sergio Mora and Lee beating formerly unbeaten world ranked Craig McEwan and veteran fighter, Alex Bunema. The Kronk gym founder also stated its a fight the public want to see.
I believe a fight between Andy Lee and Brian Vera is the fight the boxing public want to see and TV companies want to broadcast. Both fighters have different styles and as we all know it is styles that make fights. Lets hope we can make in for some time in 2011.
