Dee Walsh to defend Irish title against Kid Shamrock?
DEE Walsh could defend his Irish title against ‘Kid Shamrock’ on June 6.
The undefeated son of ‘The Shamrock Express’ Shea Neary, James Metcalf has expressed an interest in challenging the Belfast puncher for his light middleweight strap.
A Celtic title shot has been muted for ‘Waldo’, who pushed his record to 11-0 on March 28, but manager Mark Dunlop this week told the Irish Boxing Forum podcast that an Irish title defence looks likely.
Anthony Fitzgerald and Denis Hogan have been mentioned as likely opponents, but Dunlop suggested Hogan turned down all advances to make a fight and revealed no ‘Fitzy’ contact was made.
He revealed Metcalf was an option and said Walsh could defend against the Liverpool fighter, who fights for the tenth time on April 19, as early as June 6.
Metcalf has expressed an desire to challenge Walsh saying:
“I am definitely looking at a title shot next year,” declared the former Salisbury ABC boxer.
“And I wouldn’t mind fighting for the Irish title.
“It is something I’ve always wanted to do and my dad didn’t box for one, so that’s another reason why I want to.He boxed in Ireland but never had the chance to fight for an Irish title.”
