Dean Walsh wins at European Championships
Dean Walsh has won his opening bout of the 41st European Amateur Boxing Championships in Samokov, Bulgaria.
The Wexford light welterweight won against Romania’s Daniel Niculescu. The National Senior Elite champion (and winner of the Best Boxer award at the tournament) was a class above his Eastern European opponent.
Walsh progressed to the last eight on a unanimous decision (30-27,30-27, 29-28) following a tough three rounds with Romanian light-welter Florentin Niculescu.
Walsh will compete in the quarter finals on Wednesday afternoon. If the St. Ibar’s/St. Joseph’s boxer wins this bout he will guarantee himself a first major international medal.
