1934: Jimmy McLarnin, Ireland’s greatest ever fighter, reclaimed his World welterweight title at Madison Square Garden. Barney Ross had taken the title from him four months previously at the same venue, but the Down boxer prevailed this time round in a split decision win. Ross would then reclaim the belt from McLarnin in their next fight the following year.

1998: Belfast’s Brian Magee outpointed Jamaican Ron Donaldson (25-14) to guarantee middleweight bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. The future European champion would lose in the semi finals to England’s eventual gold medalist John Pearce (19:29).
