2012: Up on the cards, Andy Lee succumbed to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in the seventh round of their WBC middleweight title clash at the Sun Bowl, in El Paso, Texas. In as the ‘opponent’ and with everything in Chavez’s favour, Lee acquitted himself well but was unable to keep the much larger Mexican off him and was eventually stopped standing.

1971: Brendan McCarthy outpointed Bulgaria’s Danail Rusinov to claim bronze for Ireland at the European Championships in Spain. En-route to the medal decider the featherweight overcame Czech fighter Karel Kaspar and Englishman Tommy Wright. In the semis he would lose to Hungarian Andras Botos, who would claim Olympic bronze the following year.
