On This Day: July 6th
1996: In the first of two fights, Steve Collins defeated ‘The Dark Destroyer’ Nigel Benn at the Nynex Arena in Manchester to defend his WBO super middleweight title for the fourth tune. The fight came to a premature end in the fourth when Benn fell and twisted his ankle while throwing a punch. The Englishman briefly tried to continue but would turn away and give the referee no choice but to end the bout and hand Collins, who had been up on the cards anyway, a technical knockout victory.
2013: Katie Taylor claimed her fifth successive EU title in Keszthely, Hungary. The Bray woman knocked-out home favourite Sara Benke in their quarter final before winning a unanimous decision over Mira Potkonen of Finland in the semis. In the decider Taylor overcame French rival Estelle Mosselly via split decision.
