1992: Up on the cards, Ray Close was stopped in the eight round by unbeaten champion Frank Nicotra in their European super middleweight title fight in Paris. A huge uppercut had Close in trouble, and while he beat the count, the bout was waved off when the Frenchman swarmed in.
1987: Future World champion Eamonn Loughran defeated Canadian Anthony Duffin to secure a silver medal at the World Junior (under-18) Championships in Havana, Cuba. En-route to the final the Ballymena man defeated American Tony Robinson by disqualification and sensationally knocked out Cuban Armando Marino Alfonso. In the final Loughran would lose to Mihai Leu of Romania.
