1999: Leeds-based Wexford welter Derek Roche defended his British title for the first time. Fighting Basildon’s Georgie Smith at the Sands Centre in Carlisle, ‘The Rebel’ scored a unanimous decision (117-111) victory. The New Ross-born 147lber would defend the belt once more against Scott Dixon before losing to Harry Dhami and later again to Neil Sinclair in an attempt to win the strap back.
