2014: Mayo’s Ciara Ginty secured silver at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China. The Geesala BC lightweight claimed a majority decision win in her semi final against Turkey’s Esra Yildiz to add to her quarter final victory over Italian Monica Floridia. In the final Ginty was defeated by American Jajaira Gonzalez.
1945: John Ingle outpointed Clonmel’s reigning champion Jimmy Smith over twelve rounds at the Theatre Royal in Dublin to win the Irish lightweight title. Dublin’s Ingle would defend the belt successfully against Johnny Ward the following year, but was defeated in 1947 by Paddy Dowdall.
1900: Dundalk’s Sailor Tom Sharkey was knocked out in the second round of his rematch with the legendary Bob Fitzsimmons at the Coney Island AC in Brooklyn. The quick win saw Fitzsimmons avenged his hugely controversial disqualification loss from four years previously.
