2008: Four comprehensive wins on the bounce, culminating with a 10:3 win over Britain’s Tony Jeffries, saw Kenny Egan stroll to Olympic light heavyweight silver in Beijing. Earlier in the Games Egan had defeated Virgin Islander Julius Jackson (22:2), Turk Bahram Muzaffer (10:2), and Brazilian Washington Silva (8:0). In the final the Neilstown puncher would be controversially denied by home fighter Zhang Xiaoping (7:11).
1930: Belfast’s Jack Garland knocked out Packey McFarland in the ninth round at the Ulster Hall to defend his Irish featherweight title. Garland had won the belt four months previously, outpointing Frank McAloran.
1922: Future World champion Mike McTigue knocked out George Smith in the fourth round in Montreal to reclaim his Canadian middleweight title which he had lost the previous year.
