Stephen Ormond [21(11)-2(0)] will get the chance to put himself in line for the IBF lightweight title next month.

‘The Rock’ will fight in a World title eliminator in just over three weeks time on Friday August 5th in Las Vegas.

The opponent for the clash will be revealed in the near future

Ormond secured a World ranking with the IBF back in March when he defeated Marcos Jiminez, who was later found to be benefitting from performance-enhancing steroids, on a Murphy’s Boxing card in Boston and the Clondalkin fighter has since moved up to #9 on the organisation’s ladder.

Ormond, who is promoted by Murphy’s Boxing and advised by Al Haymon, has been training heavily for the past six weeks ahead of the Stateside showdown.

The eliminator under the bright neon Vegas lights seemed a million miles away for Ormond last February when he succumbed to a grief-affected disqualification loss to now-WBO lightweight champ Terry Flanagan. However, the Irishman doubled down, reeled off four successive wins, and joined up with big players in the American market to forge himself an opportunity.

At 33, the bout presents what will most likely be a do-or-die final chance for the Paschal Collins-trained Dubliner to break onto the World scene.

Sauerland-promoted Ghanaian Richard Commey will fight for the vacant title against American Robert Easter on a date to be confirmed later this Autumn.
