Date and Venue confirmed for Mike Perez v Mairis Briedis World Title fight and WBSS Quarter Final

Cork-Cuban Mike Perez [22(14)-2(1)-1] has been handed a date for his cruiserweight world title challenge.

‘The Rebel’ Perez was chosen by WBC 200lbs champion Mairis Briedis [22(18)-0] for the World Boxing Super Series quarter finals and it has been today confirmed that the pair will fight on Saturday September 30th at the Riga Arena in Latvia’s capital.

#2 seed Briedis hails from the city and won the vacant belt earlier this year with a points win over former WBO champ Marco Huck.

The fight will be just Perez’s second at the weight following his routine comeback win over Slovak champion Viktor Biscak last month, a fight which lasted just 29 seconds.

The 31 year old, a former world-rated heavyweight, has returned to the sport following two years out in which he has slimmed down to cruiserweight under trainer Luke Thomas and found a new mental focus.

The winner of the fight in ten weeks time will then fight in a unification in early 2018 against the winner of the WBO title fight between champion and tournament favourite Oleksandr Usyk and former champ Huck.

TV details for the fight, and the other 13 WBSS fights across cruiser and super middle, will be announced in the near future.
