Darren O’Neill: Taylor is the greatest Irish boxer of all time
LONDON 2012 captain Darren O’Neill has heralded Katie Taylor as the greatest Irish boxer of all time.
Taylor won a record-equalling fifth consecutive world title at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Jeju, South Korea and O’Neill was present to witness the historic feat.
The victory, Taylor’s twelfth major title, cements her status as the greatest female fighter of all time. There are those who argue Taylor, who has dominated her sport since 2006, is the greatest Irish sport person of all time. O’Neill is in no doubt Taylor is the greatest Irish person ever to lace up a pair of gloves.
“As far as I’m concerned, Katie Taylor is the greatest of all-time. She has six European titles, five worlds and an Olympic gold.”
“I think she is the greatest of all-time and I have said this through the last few years before she ever had the medals that we don’t appreciate her enough. Thankfully in the last few years she is beginning to get the credit she deserves.
“She is phenomenal and I don’t think we will ever see anything like it again.”
