Cully progresses to European Youth last eight

Gary Cully showed his class to book his ticket into the last-eight of the European Youth Championships in Croatia today, but Francis Cleary bowed out despite a brave performance in Zagreb.

Cully, the 2013 European Youth champion at flyweight, had way too much ring craft and skill for Croatian light-welter Matej Simec, the St David’s BC southpaw, who was towering over his opponent, repeatedly picking off his shots en route to a convincing win.

Cleary took a standing count in the first against the aggressive Albanian bantamweight Rexhildo Zeneli, but the the Galway teen battled his way back into contention in rounds one and two of a high-tempo bout before Zenili got the decision.

The St Michael’s Athy pair of Willie Donoghue and John Joyce, both current World and European Junior champions, will be in action this evening. Session starts at 5pm (Irish time).

Cully now joins Darryl Moran and James Cleary in the quarter-finals.
