Cork’s McCarthy has to settle for silver after loss to Russia at Euro Youths
Cork lightweight Oliver McCarthy this afternoon lost his his final at the European Youth Championships in Anapa, Russia, to home favourite Beslan Khamzaev.
The Brian Dillon BC fighter scored a brilliant win over Azerbaijan’s Sarhan Aliev to book his place in the final, but was undone by Khamzaev in a close fight.
The slick Munster southpaw fought on the back foot for the majority of the clash and scored plenty of eye-catching counters throughout, but the relentless energy of the come-forward Russian won the favour of the judges.
