Conlon gets Ireland’s World Champ Campaign off to perfect start

Michael Conlon got Ireland’s campaign at the 2011 AIBA World Championships and Olympic qualifiers off to a flying start in Baku, Azerbaijan this afternoon.

The St John Bosco BC Belfast flyweight beat Alexandr Riscan of Moldova 25-12 in the last-64 of the tournament. The 19-year-old, who was 17-8 up going into the third and final round against Riscan today, will now meet Olzhas Sattibayev of Kazkhstan in the last-32 on Sunday. Conlon, the current Irish Elite champion, is the only Irish boxers in action today.
