Conlan wins thrilling final to claim Commonwealth Gold
MICHEAL Conlan came from behind to eventual win a thrilling bantamweight Commonwealth Games decider in Glasgow on Saturday.
The talented St John Bosco puncher claimed Team Northern Ireland’s second top podium finish of the Games and added Commonwealth gold to his Olympic bronze with victory over England’s Qais Ashfaq.
Ashfaq shaded a tight opening round, but Conlan’s class began to show in the second stanza. The younger brother of pro Jamie Conlan, showed both variety and intent, working the head and body in destructive fashion.
Entering round three, the National champion was ahead by one point, but was leaving nothing to chance and did enough to take a close round.
