Conlon to open World Champ for Ireland Tuesday

Michael Conlon will open Ireland’s campaign at the 2011 AIBA World Championships and Olympic qualifiers in Baku, Azerbaijan tomorrow.

The Belfast flyweight will meet Alexandr Riscan of Moldova over three, three minute rounds in the last-64 of the tournament.

Riscan claimed bronze at the 2011 European Senior Championships in Turkey.

Both boxers sparred in training camp in Cologne, Germany earlier this month.

Tuesday’s contest will take place between 3pm and 4pm (Irish time).

Meanwhile, Ken Egan will face Jose Gomez Larduet in his first contest next Monday.

The Cuban stopped Lubos Velecky of the Czech Republic 2 minutes and 20 seconds into the first round in Baku today.

Gomez-Larduet, who won bronze at light-heavyweight at the 2009 AIBA World Senior Championships in Milan, was 14-2 ahead when the heavyweight contest was halted.

Paddy Barnes will also be in action for the first time at the 2011 World Championships next Monday. The Belfast light-flyweight will meet Mark Anthony Barriga of the

 

Philippines in the last 32-stage.

Barriga beat Stefan Caslarov of Romania 12-5 today to set up the 49Kg three-rounder with Ireland’s 2008 Olympic bronze medalist and 2010 European champion.
